Mudras for Health and Spiritual Development

Mudras are yoga pose or Asanas made with our hands. These hand postures affect us on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Because each finger correspond to a meridian which in turn corresponds to an organ (liver, heart, bladder...) they can bring relief from physical ailment quickly.

Most people who are familiar with mudras use them to deepen their meditation state. Combine with a specific breathing patterns these can have a profound effect on our state of consciouness. Some Mudras can entrain a specifc energy pattern associated with a complex range of elements, emotions and beleif system. These mudras are thus gestures which symbolize divine-like manifestation. and are believed to generate forces that invoke the spirituality the Buddhas taught.

For example One can "journey to the pure land of each of the Five Buddhas by using the corresponding mudras fro that land during meditation.

In this tradition the five fingers of the mudra, starting with the thumb, are identified with one of the five elements, namely the sky, wind, fire, water, and the earth, (which is be different with Jin Shin Jyutsu or other modality.) Every form in the universe is said to be composed of a unique combination of these elements. Each Pure Land of the Buddha is a combination of these elements with predominance of one. Each is composed of quality and challenges when not in balance for an individual meditating with the corresponding Mudra.

Each Buddha/Pure Land is associated with a seed sound, a color, an archetype, a symbol, a cardinal point (north, east..) an element, (fire/earth...) and a mudra. So while in meditation to bring up the emotion related to the quality of this Buddha you would repeat the seed sound as a mantra while holding a specific mudra.

For example the Earth Touching/Calling the Earth to Witness mudra, may bring up either self doubt, fear and "what right to have have to be here" that may lead to memories of passive aggressive attitude, anger and destruction, or the immouvable imperturbable peace of knowing that you are one with creation. The Symbol of the Vajra like an infinite sign of birth and rebirth in which death has no value.

One of the principles of Jin Shin Jyutsu is that in a 24 hour period energy feed all the organs of our body. When we have a block some where it created an area of depletion and an area of congestion. When doing mudras you want to remember to breath, to do the mudra at least 15 minutes 3 times a day. If possible avoid stressing situation when practicing instead visualize a beautiful place in nature that you love and relax. At first the mudra may not be easy to hold. Rest your hand on your legs or a pillow or bed to straighten the fingers that are stiff and curled inward. If you experience discomfort of course either reduce the time or discontinue.

As you go in a state of meditation you can repeat a mudra associated with the harmonized state you are trying to reach. Always make it an affirmation like the one suggested here with each mudra

Every day Breathing Mudras

Chin Mudra (Abominal Breathing)
Join the tip of the index finger to the tip of the thumb, making the “OK” sign. Extend the last three fingers. Place your hands on the tops of your thighs, palms down. Close your eyes and relax the muscles of your face. Breathe deeply through the nose, Feel your belly expand as the diaphragm expands, pushing out the abdominal wall.


Emergency Astma Mudra.
Both hands: Place the little finger at the base of the thumb, the ring finger on the upper thumb joint, and the middle finger on the pad of the thumb. Extend the index finger.Pause after each inhale and each exhale. Mantra. Every breath gives me strength. It strengthens my body, mind, and soul.

Herbal Remedy: Thyme (Thymus serpyllum L.), Primrose (Primula peris L.), and Elder (Sambucus nigra L.) are the most important herbs for the bronchial tubes.


Astham Mudra: Both hands: Press together the fingernails of the middle fingers and keep other fingers extended. In case of an acute asthma attack, first do the Bronchial Mudra (Number 4) for 4 to 6 minutes. Then use this Asthma Mudra until the breathing calms down. For long-term treatment, use these two mudras five times every day for 5 minutes.
Affirmation: I have a healthy appetite for the small and large adventures of life. I digest the challenges with great pleasure and joy.


Sinus and Chest Congestion:

Varuna Mudra.

Bend the little finger of your right hand until the tip touches the ball of your right thumb; place the thumb of your right hand on it.
Press the little finger and thumb slightly with your left thumb. At the same time, your left hand encircles the right hand lightly from below.
Do as needed, or practice three times a day for 45 minutes.

Affirmation: I always have “possibilities”—letting go of something, searching for a solution, and changing things.


Pain and Joint Mudra

Right hand: Thumb and ring finger together.
Left hand: Thumb and middle finger together.

Do as needed, or four times a day for 15 minutes. In case of illness, the mudra should be held six times a day for 30 minutes. This mudra balances energy in your joints. I have had very good experience with it when my knees were sore after a hike, especiallywalking down mountains, or when I have worked too long at the computer and have an unpleasant feeling in my elbows.

Affirmation: I enjoy my flexibility. It uplifts my soul and stimulates my mind.


Vayu Mudra for muscle cramps

With each hand bend the index finger so that its tip touches the ball of the thumb. Then press the thumb lightly onto the index finger. Extend the other fingers in a relaxed way.

For chronic complaints, do this mudra three times daily for 15 minutes; otherwise, use it until it has an effect. This position prevents "wind" (meaning flatulence), and a sensation of fullness, in all parts of the body. Ayurvedic medicine assumes that there are 51 types of wind in the body that produce numerous disorders. These include gout, sciatica, flatulence, rheumatism, Muscle-spasm, Muscle-cramps, Muscular rigidity and trembling in the hands, throat, and head.


Linga Mudra to boost the Immune system

Place both palms together and clasp your fingers. One thumb should remain upright; encircle it with the thumb and index finger of your other hand. Do as needed or three times a day for 15 minutes. This finger position increases the powers of resistance against coughs, colds, and chest infections. It also loosens mucus that has collected in the lungs. In addition, it is very useful for people who suffer from respiratory complaints when the weather changes. It also increases the body temperature and is particularly suited for people who don't develop a fever that is high enough. Fever is important because many bacteria within the body can only be killed when it reaches a certain temperature.

Affirmation: My powers of resistance develop more and morefrom moment to moment.

Bhudi Mudra helps with weight loss

Bhudi Mudra: to reduce weight caused by water retention.

Place the tip of your thumb and little finger together; extend the other fingers in a relaxed way. Do this with each hand. Do as needed, or practice three times a day for 15 minutes as a course of treatment. More than half our body weight consists of fluids. The Bhudi Mudra helps restore or maintain equilibrium in the fluid balance. It can be used against a dry mouth, eyes that are too dry and burning, or disorders in the kidney and bladder area. It also improves the sense of taste.

Bhramara Mudra Allergies and Immune System

Place your index finger in the thumb fold, and the tip of your thumb on the side of your middle fingernail. Extend your ring and little fingers. Do this \with each hand. Do four times a day for 7 minutes. If you have more time, you can hold the Bhramara Mudra up to eight times a day for about 20 minutes. The name of this mudra comes from Indian dance and represents the bee. Today we use bee products against allergies, and this mudra has the same effect.

The cause of allergies is a weakened immune system and/or intestinal flora that has also been affected. For example, antibiotics and many other medications harm the intestinal flora. The effects are mucous congestion in the frontal sinuses, bronchial tubes, and intestinal tract, not to mention a great variety of rashes.



Self-Hypnosis for any issue to do for a minimum of 7 days up to three weeks..

When you go to bed and just before you are ready to fall asleep, give yourself the following suggestion while holding each finger in turn for a total of 10 affirmations:
“Every day, in every way, I am better and better”
While you are saying the suggestion, see yourself completely healthy and doing what you love with vitality, joy. Imagine any other positive feeling while doing this.
In order not to fall asleep and not to lose count, every time you say the suggestion press and hold with each finger of your right hand. Then, continue with each finger of your left hand until you’ve completed the suggestion 10 times.
This may be your first attempt at learning to effectively program yourself through suggestion. It is of the utmost importance to do this exercise every night without falling asleep until you’ve completed the 10 repetitions.
You are beginning to establish a habit pattern of properly programming yourself by giving yourself positive suggestions before going to sleep. The next day, you’ll find yourself reacting very positively to that suggestion.
